Phil Jones Contemplated Suicide
February 7th, 2010I thought of killing myself, says climate scandal professor Phil Jones
That is the headline of a recent article in the Times Online.
THE scientist at the centre of the “climategate” email scandal has revealed that he was so traumatised by the global backlash against him that he contemplated suicide.
Professor Phil Jones said in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Times that he had thought about killing himself “several times”.
His dilemma?
“I am just a scientist. I have no training in PR or dealing with crises.”
I had to think about posting on this topic for quite some time. Anytime that someone considers suicide it is a sad event. But then I reflected on the wreckage that Phil Jones has left in his wake.
Did he ever consider the impact on careers and emotions of others as he cowardly worked behind the scenes to prevent their work from being published?
He, driven by a strong ego, was cowardly in his science; afraid of real peer review or criticism. Cowardly enough to want to hide his data, his programming, and attempt to hide his underhanded unethical activities.
Because of that I don’t feel as badly about his mental state as I perhaps should. Maybe it is just another ploy. A plea for pity to distract from his misdeeds. On the other hand, given his previous cowardly acts, it does not surprise me that he has contemplated the cowards way out. I suspect that it is not his lack of PR or crisis management skills which burden him so. Shame can be a powerful emotion and one that Phil Jones should feel plenty of. Hopefully those close to him will help him face up to his actions with courage.
